Tournaments

We take our competition seriously—Training Body and Mind Together—Skillfully

Since opening its doors in 2006, Essex Shukokai Karate students have taken medals at every national and—starting in 2012—in nearly every world tournament. North American Tournaments occur twice a year—once in autumn and once in spring—and are mandatory for green belts and above. (Please note that during years where there is also World Tournament, they will hold three North American tournaments.) Children ages seven and up are eligible to compete.

Tournaments offer students the opportunity to compete in kata (imaginary fight sequences performed solo) and kumite (sparring). Separate fees apply, and they’re paid to the American Shukokai Karate Union (ASKU) organization. The tournaments are in New Jersey.

World Tournaments happen once every two years in either Europe, Africa, or North America. Separate fees apply, and they’re paid to the hosting country/dojo. Transportation to the venue and accommodation are paid individually. Team USA Training for the World Tournament begins at the start of the year, takes place every Saturday until the tournament, and is open to all participating dojos. Children ages 10 and up are eligible to participate. This event is only open to brown belts and black belts.
